Beacons Augmented Reality Mobile Application Research Report Draft 1

Miguel Guerrero Beacons Augmented Reality Mobile Application Research Report February 25, 2019 Introduction Last semester, I focused on exploring the potential of augmented reality technology by creating the foundation for an augmented reality mobile application. The project that I created under the supervision of Mark Skwarek, the director of NYU’s Mobile Augmented Reality Lab, is called Beacons. To use Beacons, users open the camera on the app while they are walking outside. As the camera is panned around the environment, tooltips appear over buildings to indicate the establishment’s name, rating, type and price range. For my senior project, I endeavor to continue the development of this application and building upon the foundations to provide more value to users of the app. I also wish to resolve   issues related to tracking because the current tracking is not so accurate, causing tooltips for establishments to sometimes appear in the wrong places. The first steps are to evaluate the current state of the AR app and determine the paths towards providing a better user experience and value proposition. It would like entail using 3D data in a more compelling way. The scope of the project can be adjusted to fit within this timeframe by adding or removing project objectives. The only main obstacles would be limitations with the technology, so certain project objectives would have to be cancelled if they are not viable. I would like to allow people to be able to place messages around the map as a way to communicate with each other in a geographic context. An extra objective would be to figure out a way for the app to utilize 3D data of the world to calibrate the maps more accurately. The proof of concept would be an app that allows people to view places around them and also allow people to communicate with each other in the geographical context. The project would utilize my skills in augmented reality, virtua...
